After moving to Paris from New York City and starting a family, the prospect of developing a family vacation retreat in the south west of Ireland became more practical and alluring; the house could be accessed easier and would be used more frequently. Following the initial period when the house was used exclusively by the current owner’s parents during their retirement, the house had been rented long term. During the latter period it had taken some abuse and so was due was due for an extensive upgrade.
The house was built by the parents of the present owner as a vacation home to be used during retirement. As a prime example of the infamous “’bungalow blight” it possessed minimal architectural attributes aside from being well positioned on a magnificent site situated on the famed Ring of Kerry.
Within a tight budget, the goals of the initial concept phase were to do a strategic transformation of the house which would upgrade all systems, maintain the house as a three bedroom and create a new communal space that maximized views and access to the surrounding nature.
After the selected contractor defaulted as the project was set to begin, the project went on hiatus during which it was redesigned. Because of the challenges with finding a qualified local contractor appropriate for the scale of the project.
During this stage of the project, several concepts from the Concept phase had returned to the project.
