The project involved the renovation of a 3000 sq.ft. wood-frame house to establish a relationship between the interior of the house and a dramatically terraced garden at its rear.

The design proposed a new -Delaminated Wall- comprised of a “curtain wall” of steel casement french doors, a zone of sliding screens, and a series of structural piers designed for seismic sheer. The structural piers was further developed as cabinetry, each unit functionally specific to its location in plan. The new rear wall was further elaborated at the exterior by a -Terrace-Bridge- which spanned a drainage moat while extending the interior of the house into the garden. This -Terrace-Bridge-, constructed of an aluminum frame with terrazzo precast pavers, negotiates the variable exterior grade at the rear edge of the house. The interior plan was designed to respond to the new spatiality resulting from the transformation of the rear wall of the house.
