Fundamentals 1 – Fall 1995

Fundamentals 1 serves as an introduction to the basic principals involved in the organization of two and three dimensional space along with the technical drawing types and conventions used in the description of architectural configurations.

Six Projects:

Unity- Using non-architectonic elements (12 sticks and 12 stones) make an ordered and consistent spatial system which investigated primary notions of structure, interior/ exterior, mass and volume.

Dialogue- Using the architectonic elements of the “kit of parts”, establish a charged relationship between two distinct spatial elements.

Volume- Using the “kit of parts” develop a precisely defined cubic volume that investigates the homogeneity of solid and void and continuity of field while developing the internal x,y and z axis equally.

Transformation- Using the “kit of parts” investigate the transformation of a four inch cube through various modes of linear displacement; rotation, folding, mirroring etc. Develop a consistent vocabulary of displacement.

Expression- Using the “kit of parts” investigate formal expression by investing the architectonic configuration with pair characteristics such as front/back, horizontal/vertical and orthogonal/diagonal.

Timepiece- Using the “kit of parts” celebrate the passage of time through the development of ideas passage and human inhabitation within the celestial sphere.
