Design 1 – Fall-1995
Following immediately from Fundamentals, Design 1 introduces specific issues such as site and program as they pertain to the generation of architectural form/space. The first problem introduces procession and sequence in the context of site. The second introduces a simplified program of exterior spaces. The third introduces the primary program of dwelling within the context of a hypothetical site.
Three Projects:
Architectural Promenade/Composition- Bridge/Cube/Tower- Problem 1 introduced for the first time the element of site as a generator of an architectural parti. The problem required the composition of an architectural promenade developed around a sequence of spaces/experiences that moved from the site into and up though the 30x30x30 cubic volume to its top.
Airplane Museum- Problem 2 again introduced site, this time the top of an existing building over looking NYC harbor. The problem also introduced the student to a more complex program for a public building.
In-fill House- Problem 3 introduced the student for the first time to the problem of the house. The house was intended for a family consisting of two parents and three children. Also, there was the requirement for a workspace for one of the parents to conduct their professional work. The aim was for the student to begin to understand the reciprocity between distinct parts of the program to arrive at a greater whole.
