Fundamentals 2 – Spring 1995-1996

Fundamentals 2 serves as a continuing introduction to the basic principals involved in the organization of two and three-dimensional space with emphasis on human occupation. More complex technical drawing along with color theory are introduced.

Five Projects:

Oragami- Using a sheet of 8 1/2”x11” paper, explore creating volume from a two-dimensional surface. Document in drawing the sequence of processes.

Prelude – Using selected paintings, invent the sectional order on the x, y and z axis to produce a paper model interpretation that defines a series of spaces that develop analogies to structure all six sides of the shallow construction volume.

Harmony- Using the ‘kit of parts” construct a three-dimensional programmed configuration and organize private and communal circulation from ground to fourth story roof. Investigate spatial complexity, continuity and simultaneous readings. Document the model in plan, section, elevation and axonometric, in ink.

Concerto- Using the “kit of parts” organize a thirty-foot cub incorporating a “tartan” grid to accommodate several programmatic volumes and a complex circulation. Document the solution in plan, section elevation and axonometric in ink.

Symphony- Working in pairs and using standard construction materials, design and fabricate a structure to accommodate the display of the semesters work. Select a site within the parking lot to situate the structure. The exhibition space should be made accessible to the every day commuter.
