The project is for an urban retreat or two scullers. The building(s) are conceived of as an analogy of the site condition. The following themes were explored: structural expression; symmetry vs. asymmetry; the individual and community; comradery and solitude; facade and body; courtyard.

The house will be used primarily on weekends but may also be used for extended periods of training. Living quarters should uphold individual privacy yet at the same time support the possibility for comradery and interaction. Access to the site may be be foot and/or train and or boat. The site is a 100 foot high promontory at the tip of Manhattan Island on the Bronx side of the East River. This sliver of rock is bound on one side by train tracks and on the other by the East River.
