The project involved the 10,000-sf renovation of an existing agricultural building formally used as a rabbitry as a combined commercial and residential development incorporating two guest rental apartments and a conference/banquet facility that could accommodate two separate events simultaneously.
The diverse programs were “stacked” horizontally along the extruded building form being linked by a service core running the length of the structure along the two outer edges.
The existing long-span roof form was modified to incorporate a continuous south facing clearstory running the entire length of the building thereby substantially improving the daylight within the structure. Courtyards associated with each apartment book-end the structure and frame views of the rural landscape.
An existing stream is straightened along the portion running adjacent to the structure to frame the forecourt used for outdoor entertaining when permitted by the weather. Two wood and glass pedestrian bridges link the parking area to the south and denote the axis of entry for each of the event spaces.
